I have memtest86 bootable from my hard disc: you can put it into
(say) /boot/memtest86.bin and add

title memtest86
	kernel /boot/memtest86.bin

to your /etc/grub.conf.  (or add something very similar to your
/etc/lilo.conf if you use lilo).  (and you need to omit the
"/boot" if you have a separate /boot partition).  (and why is life
so complicated :-))
