Just an add-on:

I do not know whether my problem interferes with tpctl,
which is also installed on my system, but which I never
tried out.  Now, I have just done so and get, for example:

tpctl -ix
tpctl: SMAPI BIOS error 0x86 ("function is not supported") -- exiting.

Here, /dev/thinkpad is a link to /dev/smapi ...
Anything wrong with this?
