Greg,

Yes, it works fine under Linux for the hard disk (an Evergreen Fireline 
HotDrive).
I also tried it with an iPod - which looks promising (gscanbus can see 
it), but as it's not my iPod, I couldn't go any further. I'm afraid that 
I haven't tried with a DV camera.

The card is an Evergreen Technologies Fireline PCMCIA cardbus card - it 
has dual 1394 ports (not USB). It is about 2 1/2 years old.

If you want a quick test before you start hacking at things, try the 
latest Knoppix - as this is very good at autodetecting and setting up 
hardware.
