This is a configuration option in the BIOS.  You have the internal
pointing device set to "auto", which means the BIOS will enable or
disable the internal pointing device depending on whether or not an
external pointing device is plugged in.  So this is a feature, not a bug.

You can also set up the internal pointing device to be always enabled,
or always disabled.  And you can also mess with the current settings
while the system is running, by using the tpctl program.
