FYI, keychain (rpm in Mandrake contrib for those interested) does this,
and maintains your ssh-agent between logins, and starts up an ssh-add
when necessary, immediately after login. It's setup to work in any login
(KDE, GNOME, console etc). You must just run keychain once on the
commandline to get it to start up next time you log in.

Things which are desktop-neutral can be started via /etc/X11/xinit.d (as
tpb and tp4utils do), whereas apps that are not dependant on X can be
started via /etc/profile.d (which is where keychain has a script to do
start up).
