Sure. I am using Debian unstable, and running a straight Linus kernel
pulled somewhere about half way between 2.5.68 and 2.5.69, no patches
other than a local and *unrelated* patch to IEEE-1394.

Disable DRI in XFree86, use a text mode console, don't build ACPI, and
all should be good. I have no idea what SuSE do to their kernels, and I
have not tried XFree86 4.3 on this machine to see if it corrects the DRI
problems.
