[ltp] How screwed am I?

Well,

I don't know about the 600's, but on the newer systems there's a spill tray
in the keyboard, with a rim around it to contain water and protect the
computer. If you spill stuff on it, you power off (if it's safe to) and
unplug it immediately. You might even need to take the battery out. Then
you shake it off, let it dry out upside down and it works again. It's even
documented in the help system. :-)

However, the fact that your 600 immediately powered off is not good. It is
possible to short out the main power supply or otherwise completely ruin
the system if the water isn't contained by the keyboard. If I were you
(because I'd really want to know right away) I would unplug it, pull out
the battery, and (after removing excess water, and turning it upside for a
bit, etc) try to remove the keyboard to see if the fluid got down in there.
Again, I'm not sure about the 600s, but on the newer ones this works well,
and taking out the keyboard is pretty easy and well documented on the
website. It also doesn't hurt to remove peripherals like your hard
drive to save them just in case. It could be that once the system is
*completely* dry, it will work again... otherwise they're still pretty fun
to disassemble, and reassemble if you can.... :-D I have to admit to a
particular bias though, my first week working in personal computing I got
handed a laptop and within 30 minutes I had completely dissasembled it,
much to the dismay of my project manager..... and yes, I did get back into
working order, although hours later.... 0:-)

Good luck,

Pam

That rules!

OK, I hate spending money on things that instead could/should be fixed, but
this is too damn good to pass up.

I'm gonna let the thing dry out, in the *hopes* that it comes back, but, in
my heart I know the truth... it's dead, Jim.

Thanks!
