At this point you could also have run diskdrake of course ...

If that is all you had to do to get it to work, that does not seem very
broken (you didn't even compile anything) ... however you may want to
report this on cooker to see if someone can find a solution for loading
the modules up in the right order, or ensuring that the module gets probed.

AFAIK, it is actually possible to install Mandrake 9.0 from/on firewire
devices ...
