[ltp] T20 screen problems with the latest xserver?

Just moved my Knoppix/Debian setup to 'testing'.

xserver-xfree86 was initially 'held back' so I ran it manually.

I'm not sure, but it seems only after doing this I have severe
'shimmering' effects on any coloured screen. Have turned off colors and
wallpapers in X and in my Windows (accessed via rdesktop) and it's now
just usable, but still has shimmer/flicker on menus.

How should I proceed?
