I'm afraid it's normal with 2.4 kernels.  When there is much disk
activity (especially large streaming writes), the rest of the system is
often starved (sound skips, mouse freezes for a second or two, etc.).

Perhaps a kernel patch or two would help (low latency, preempt,
alternative disk schedulers).
