I usually use xine - and it needs a /dev/dvd to be a link to the
device.  

Currently I have xine, mplayer installed from http://rpm.livna.org/ on
a T40 with redhat rawhide - and it xine works fine with dvds.

You should be able to install both these tools for redhat - from the
same site - using yum.
