You can always use "vi", very fast.

I believe you. You might have to speed up your disk a little; can you run a "hdpram -Tt /dev/hda" and copy/paste the results ?

You'll probably have to run a "hdparm -d1 /dev/hda" in order to enable DMA.

More memory would help quite a bit.
