In this case, nothing happens. Desktop unchanged.

If I had my modem connected up, I could send you a desktop picture.
But.. I see no reference to KDE, GNOME or anything particular on the
screen. The desktop is black. And there are a few icons at bottom, and
left. Mostly generic things, Trash, and User home.

I looked through the whole Red Hat install procedure, and I can't see
any reference to any of these terms you refer to.
