Otoh, (according to my experience of dealing with power management and
APM/ACPI from 2.4.21preX to 2.6.0-test4-mm5, on a X.31) I would say:

* If you are not interested (not yet) in a 2.6.0 kernel, stick with APM
and a 2.4.2X kernel. ACPI is not fully functional, and I can't
hibernate/suspend with ACPI (with APM I can sleep/hibernate using the BIOS
and Fn+F12). With APM you can also use the thinkpad package and apmiser
See my previous email about ACPI.

swsusp (swsusp.sf.net) worked for me in a 2.4.2X.

* If you are using a 2.6.0 kernel, bear in mind that:
Power management needs a lot of work (see thread)
http://www.ussg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0309.0/0017.html

ACPI can work with several "thinkpad" patches but I can't sleep/hib/swsusp
(oopses, which may be caused by kernel bugs and/or device drivers) I use
Atheros WiFi drivers (a/b dual card) and error messages flood the
console (hardware error, retry..). APM seems to work, but the FnF12 key
does no longer work for me and the thinkpad package does not compile (in
my case is due to the fact that the kernel module has not been ported to
use the latest devfs api). However, APM is not as robust as in 2.4.2X and
sometimes it hangs.
