[ltp] X31 Heat/ACPI issues

Hi all,

I'm running Linux 2.6.4 on a 1.4GHz X31. ACPI is enabled and
SpeedStep is working.

While running on battery and with the CPU scaled down to a
maximum of 600 MHz thermal_zone is reporting around 38 degrees C
with little load and around 45 C when running standard apps in X.

With AC connected the CPU runs at up to 1.4 GHz and the system
is getting rather hot even while it's idle.
A temperature of >55 C is clearly too much for me to use it
as a "laptop" computer since I don't want to fry my legs.
Even in the 45 C state described above it hurts...

However, the fan is only switched on at a temperature > 68 C
(quickly cooling down the system afterwards but only to a
temperature of about 50 C which is still too hot).

Unfortunately the fan apparently either doesn't show up as
an ACPI component or isn't recognized by the kernel driver.
There are references to fans in the DSDT, but I'm not an
ACPI expert to compare this to what the fan driver expects.
I've also tried the latest mm patch (2.4.5-rc3-mm4) which
doesn't have any effect on this.

So, my question is, are the temperatures described above
"normal"? And has anybody managed to decrease the temperature
value that will cause the fan to be activated (~40 C would be
nice...)?

TIA,

Rene
