Thanks for the info, and for the specific models. The smc looks really nice, but the extra antenna seems like overkill. :)

I'll look into the smc and the netgear ones if I go with pcmcia. Also, has anyone had experience with the other smc card (SMC2635W) based on ADMtek? Since I was at the smc site, I looked it up. It has a pretty good range for a built-in antenna, and seems pretty good for power usage. But I wonder about the different driver.... ADMtek claims to have linux drivers. Anyone work with these?

Did the card come preinstalled? From what I've heard it's sort of a pain to install a mini pci in the thinkpads. Since I haven't owned one, I don't know from personal experience. Also does it void your warranty? Anyone had experience with this?

Except for that, I'm still looking for differences between pcmcia and built-in. And yes, I guess minipci has the advantage at durability.
