[ltp] X won't start automatically

Ok, I've checked /etc/inittab and I have
id:5:initdefault:
which means that the X server should start automatically when I boot up.
However, it doesn't. Here's the odd thing. The following message is
appended to my /var/log/messages every 30 seconds:

Apr 21 16:58:13 localhost gdm[1813]: gdm_config_parse: Authdir /var/gdm
is not owned by user gdm, group gdm. Aborting.
Apr 21 16:58:43 localhost gdm[1819]: gdm_config_parse: Authdir /var/gdm
is not owned by user gdm, group gdm. Aborting.
Apr 21 16:59:13 localhost gdm[1825]: gdm_config_parse: Authdir /var/gdm
is not owned by user gdm, group gdm. Aborting.

How do I change the user/group that onws a file or directory?

I'm running RedHat 7.3 with plenty of upgrades, including kernel 2.4.22.
Any ideas?

Thanks!

Hector
