I've looked in my bios and the serial port is enabled on IRQ 4. The IRda port is disabled so there appears to be no conflicts. I'm using a thinkpad 2647. Can anyone help me??? Thanks!!!

The first serial port is /dev/ttyS0. Note the capital S.

Try running

$ setserial -v /dev/ttyS0

It should return something like

/dev/ttyS0, UART: 16550A, Port: 0x03f8, IRQ: 4
