OK, there might be no need, but it is possible. So I wanted to give it a
try.

I've never tried suspend to disk with swsusp with APM. IBM has its own
solution for this called hibernation. You must have a DOS-partition
which is slightly bigger than your RAM where tpctl will store the
RAM-data. In addition you have to enable hibernation support with tpctl.
That works fine with APM, but not with ACPI.

With ACPI I have used the swsusp-package wich works also fine. I cannot
remember any speed differences between both systems.
