I don't use Suse - I have Mandrake  on my R40e - here is my experience:

Kernel 2.4.x = ACPI doesn't work

Kernel 2.6.x = battery monitor works OK, but had to disable the thermal module or the thinkpad hangs on boot. 
Haven't really tried other ACPI functions - don't need them.
