Hello,

I agree that it sounds like hardware.  But it may be a time-out as well as a failure.  Also, 
a BIOS setting may have changed.

Typical time-out pauses would be for something networkish - waiting for a network
response that doesn't arrive, or another hardware device that's supposed to be present
but isn't, and hence isn't responding while the system waits in a tight loop for the response.
