Are you kidding?!?!?

        $ glxgears
        2464 frames in 5.0 seconds = 492.800 FPS
        2609 frames in 5.0 seconds = 521.800 FPS
        2692 frames in 5.0 seconds = 538.400 FPS
        2689 frames in 5.0 seconds = 537.800 FPS

:-(

Kernel 2.6.1-mm3 with config:

        CONFIG_AGP=y
        # CONFIG_AGP_ALI is not set
        # CONFIG_AGP_ATI is not set
        # CONFIG_AGP_AMD is not set
        # CONFIG_AGP_AMD64 is not set
        CONFIG_AGP_INTEL=y
        # CONFIG_AGP_NVIDIA is not set
        # CONFIG_AGP_SIS is not set
        # CONFIG_AGP_SWORKS is not set
        # CONFIG_AGP_VIA is not set
        CONFIG_DRM=y
        # CONFIG_DRM_TDFX is not set
        # CONFIG_DRM_GAMMA is not set
        # CONFIG_DRM_R128 is not set
        CONFIG_DRM_RADEON=y
        # CONFIG_DRM_I810 is not set
        # CONFIG_DRM_I830 is not set
        # CONFIG_DRM_MGA is not set
        # CONFIG_DRM_SIS is not set

I installed Xfree86 4.3.99.902 from the Xinstall.sh script from XFree86
site.

I might try X4.3 from experimental if I can work out a clean way to
clean out what the install script installed...

I wonder why the dramatic difference?!
