Changing to 16bpp gave me:

        $ glxgears
        3771 frames in 5.0 seconds = 754.200 FPS
        3936 frames in 5.0 seconds = 787.200 FPS
        5112 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1022.400 FPS
        5113 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1022.600 FPS
        5229 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1045.800 FPS

So I might live with 16 bit colour for a while.

The ATI AGP setting did not make any difference.
