I think what David was getting at was that gpm will interfere with the X 
pointer. Unless you are using the mouse on the console, your best bet 
might be to disable gpm or uninstall it. Alternatively, you can 
configure X to use gpm as its source for mouse movements, which requires 
  a few changes to XF86Config. A quick Google will find these for you,
