hi, i just bought a thinkpad t40 a couple of moths ago, mostly because i
assumed that it would run pretty cool and quiet since it was a centrino.
it is running pretty cool, but far from quiet. in linux, the fan comes
on after about five minutes, whether it is being used or idle, and it
stays on constantly, even if the temperature drops. in windows however, the
same machine is whisper quiet; the fan hardly ever comes on. i have
even noticed the fan running in linux for temps as low as 85 degrees F.
i have tried every possible bios configuration i could think of, even
putting the system on fixed cpu minimum for ac, all for nothing. i
tried apm and acpi, cpufreq support with all the availible governors,
and both cpufreqd and cpudyn as userspace control, but nothing has
helped. i am running gentoo with kernel 2.6.2-mm1-rc2, but the same
behavior was observed with kernel 2.6.0, and 2.4.21-22. is there any
way at all that i can fix this? are there any t40 owners out there who
have a quiet machine with linux, or do i have to sell this machine
because i am being annoyed out of my mind? thanks alot for all of the
help,
