I dual boot XP and Debian sarge using lilo to control the MBR:
The relevant stanzas from /etc/lilo.conf are:

    image=/vmlinuz
	    label=Linux
	    read-only
	    initrd=/initrd.img
    other=/dev/hda1
	    label="Windows-XP"
