Thanks for the info - very helpful. Explains the odd behaviour of 
the touchpad.

This afternoon I tried the USB connector instead (I had been using a 
UBS->PS/2 adaptor). I restarted the machine to let mandrake (9.2) 
re-detect the hardware and all is now working perfectly, with 
IMPS/2, including the wheel.
