Did you actually generate the device node?

I'm just listening to music on my tp600e.  I indeed use the snd-cs4236
module.

ps: I don't want to rush you -- but aren't you interested in testing the =20
    apm patches? :)  Works well for me, but needs some testing (and
    confirmation) from other thinkpad users.  Please contact me, if
    you're interested...
