Not true.  According to

http://www-124.ibm.com/acpmodem/mwave.html
and going by the v90.dsp file in the mwave package it can do v90 
connects.  I regularly get better than v34 connections when I use the 
mwave modem in my 600E, though I can get slightly faster connects with 
other modems.
A typical connect string:
CONNECT 44000/ECLC

In the ppp options file you are setting the speed between the computer 
and the modem.  As long as this is faster than your connect speed you 
will be OK, so set it to 57600 or 115200.

I don't think you need anything special.  AT&F works for me.
