I'm embarrased that I didn't spot this myself.  I spent some time at
these URLs. In defence of myself, it was getting late and I was having
difficulties setting a speed of 115200 in my ppp peers file.  57600
seemed to alleviate the problems somewhat.

I don't think you need anything special.  AT&F works for me.
