That's odd. The touchpad worked for me out of the box without futzing
with the Synaptics modules (OK, but I have the T40p). But I hit it so
often accidently that I disabled it in the BIOS. This had a nice
side-effect of getting the middle mouse button to work.

Ultimately, I would like to do the following:

- Turn the touchpad on and off easily (tpctl?)

- Enable certain gestures such as one finger tap for left mouse button,
two finger tap for middle mouse button and three finger tap for right
mouse button. My old Logitech New Touch keyboard with built-in
touchpad used to do this. Nice.

- Autoscroll when finger is at an edge.

- Things I haven't even considered.

Is the touchpad hardware capable of these things? Are there drivers to
take advantage of this?

See http://www.newt.com/debian/thinkpad-t40p/ as well as the other pages
mentioned in the appendix. Much of the information there should be
application. Love my T40p. Solid machine.

I'm patiently waiting for XFree 4.3 to move from Debian experimental to
testing so that "getting the ATI drivers working" will be as easy as
running "apt-get upgrade". I use the vesa driver for now which is just
fine for Emacs, Eterms, and the GIMP.
