You might want to download PS2.EXE for DOS from IBM's web site.  Settings
made with the DOS version should carry over to a Linux boot.  I had a
760XD a long time ago, and I seem to remember having to use PS2.EXE to do
BIOS setup.  I'd give a more specific pointer, but I'm repsonding to this
message offline...

About the PCMCIA problem - I don't remember having to do this way back
then, but I had a similar PCMCIA problem on my Thinkpad 240 and had to add
"pci=assign-bussses" to the boot parameters fot the kernel to get it to
work.  Not sure if that's yout problem, but the symptoms you posted
sounded familiar.
