Yes, there are two basic types of IR port - the sort you get on remote  
controls and the sort you get on mobile phones (and notebooks). The phone  
one's only have a short range as above; the "consumer electronics" remote  
control ones much larger.

Some PDA's have a strong consumer one if you're looking for a more  
expensive universal remote :)
