There are a couple of ways to figure out what port to use.  On my 600X, 
Windows uses COM2 for the internal modem, so I should choose ttyS1.  I 
could also check dmesg to see what ports were found during startup.  The 
most sophisticated approach is to use setserial -- check the man page for 
details.

If you have a lucent modem, the driver should be included with the 
distro.  But I haven't checked this out yet.
