In North America, two prong plugs are polarized, so as to ensure the 
proper side is connected to the hot terminal.  If the wires are 
reversed, you may experience a situatuion such as yours, though I would 
have thought the AC adapter would have prevented it.  Perhaps there's a 
fault in it.
