Ok scrub my previous post, it does appear that the command
echo 3 > /proc/acpi/sleep 
does the trick with the stock FC2 kernel, so now I just have to figure
out how to tie this action to the lid switch state (which is properly
reported in /proc/acpi).
I wonder what 4 and 5 do, I guess one of them is suspend to disk.
