System: ThinkPad X21 with Ultrabay

Operating systems tried:
   (1) Fedora Core 2 (currently)
   (2) Mandrake 10.0
   (3) RedHat 9.0

GUI: Gnome

Modem: Hawkins Serial Modem (Hayes compatible)
The modem works perfectly on a serial port of a
Sun UltraSpark Workstation running Aurora Linux (a
version fo RedHat 7.3 ported to Sun)

Logical: /dev/modem points to /dev/ttyS0

Ultrabay: can locate and use diskette drive, mouse
port and RW-CD drive

Problem: Cannot detect the serial modem located on
port ttyS0 on the Ultrabay, so I am unable to connect
to my ISP.

Failures so far:
1. Gnome network device system tool – cannot
activate modem on ttyS0
2. Minicom – no response from ttyS0
3. wvdial – no response from ttyS0
4. pppd – no response from ttyS0
5. Shell commands – no response
	# echo atz > /dev/ttyS0
	# echo atdt 6175551212 > /dev/ttyS0

Help: can Linux be used to dial out on an external
modem located on a serial port of an Ultrabay
connected to a ThinkPad X21? If so, some simple
instruction on how would be very, very much
appreciated.

Thanks!
Frustrated
