Resetting BIOS had no influence on the problem.

Hmmm, pointers on finding info on this subject?

I'll power down, reseat the RAM tonight.

Thanks for pointers - it's the one annoying thing with this box, and it
was so nice when I first installed.

The only real issue I have left is remembering which kernel
options/modules I need to set to get sound working again. The initial
gentoo install got it right but I've managed to bork it up in subsequent
builds.

Hardware is *always* my downfall :)
