[ltp] Grub Problem

Subscribers of both LTP and Linux31 - please excuse the cross post.

I have a TP X31, installed Linux on a single large partition hda4, left
the original IBM MBR and predesktop thingy intact. Installed GRUB into
the boot record of hda4, did

dd if=/dev/hda4 of=grub.mbr size=512 count=1

put grub.mbr onto the Windows partition and used the Windows builtin boot
manager. This went fine until I yesterday had the idea to boot XP and run
both Windows Update (which installed only a couple of minor things as the
machine is only about three weeks old) and IBM Update Connector. Now,
when I try to boot into Linux, I get the letters GRUB and a blinking
cursor, that's it. Windows boots fine (well, as much as you can call it
fine).
I took out the hard drive, put it into my desktop box, reinstalled GRUB,
put the boot record into a file and put it onto the Windows partition,
with the same result.
I'll be most grateful for any hints that help me boot Linux again!
