Standard laptop kernel configs? [was Re: [ltp] kernel2.6.x on T41p]

Shouldn't there be a repository for laptop kernel configurations? 
Unlike desktops, the hardware in a particular laptop model is very 
predictable.  Of course some customization would have to be done to 
support other peripherals that a user has, but a base config to support 
all the laptop's native hardware (and nothing more) should be available 
somewhere.

Same thing goes for XFree86 configs.

Does this exist anywhere?
