I used a DLink DWL-G650 (.11g), but it was crap. It causes several
notebooks to hang sometimes, no matter if Linux or Windows was booted.
A also read about people with the same problem. DLink also uses
different WLAN chipsets for different hardware revisions of the card.
If you pick the wrong revision, you have lost (no Linux drivers).

Now I'm using a Netgear WAG511 (.11g and .11a) without any problems. It
also seems to have better radio performance, since I can see 2 foreign
APs at home now, which wasn't the case with the DLink card.

Both cards use an Atheros WLAN chipset, which is supported by the
Madwifi driver from <http://sourceforge.net/projects/madwifi>. It's not
a completely open source driver, since it needs a binary only HAL
module, but it seems to work quite good in managed mode. I'm using a
2.4 kernel and had not much luck when I tried the driver with a 2.6
kernel, however it officially supports 2.6.
