Have you tried the volume buttons above the keyboard? On mine they
directly affect things, including if I recall correctly, mute and an
overriding volume control.

I'm running alsa on a stock (from ftp.kernel.org) 2.6.4 kernel on a
Debian unstable system with the /etc/alsa/modutils/1.0 file that was
automatically generated:

  ### DEBCONF MAGIC
  # This file was automatically generated by alsa-base's debconf stuff

  alias char-major-116 snd
  alias char-major-14 soundcore

  options snd major=116 cards_limit=4

  alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
  alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
  alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
  alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
  alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
  alias /dev/dsp* snd-pcm-oss

  alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0
  alias snd-card-1 snd-usb-audio

  alias snd-slot-0 snd-card-0
  alias sound-slot-0 snd-slot-0
  alias snd-slot-1 snd-card-1
  alias sound-slot-1 snd-slot-1

Hope this helps.
