I recall some IBM testimony in the Msoft antitrust suit.  Microsoft told 
IBM if they didn't stop offering alternate OS's pre-installed on PC's 
(largely OS/2 at the time, my first thinkpad came with both) they would 
have to pay retail for each Windows license. I think at the time large 
computer makers were typically paying about 1/4 of retail price.
