You could always go with the Orinoco Classic Gold cards. I've had them
working for a long time with Linux. They do 802.11b very well and I
have had them working with a variety of routers including a Linksys
WRT54G, a Netgear, and a Lucent/Orinoco AP200. I also have been using
the linuxant drivers which allow windows-only 54G wireless card like
the WPC54G to work with a variety of Linux distributions. They are at
www.linuxant.com. You could also use the ndiswrapper at
ndiswrapper.sf.net (I think).

I use Debian Unstable here so all I have to do is add the
wireless-tools package and get a kernel with orinoco support.

I think you should be able to also find cards based on the atheros
chipset and use the madwifi drivers and there are probably a group of
yet other cards that work very well thta others can tell you about.
