Too many I thinks here for me considering the stakes. :\

If I erased Windows, have Linux but saved the HPA (it can be mounted
from within Linux), is it the case that I can make a blank partition at
the start of the disk and restore windows?  In other words, will the HPA
restore blitz all of hda or only hda1?

The guy I asked at IBM wouldn't/couldn't answer this question.  I'd like
to know if anyone has definite experience here restoring from HPA
without.
