Could it be that glxgears uses software rendering? IIRC I had the same
behaviour when I tried GL stuff on my A30 with 24 bit colour depth, as
the video memory isn't suffiecent for 3D acceleration at full
resolution and colour depth. Maybe you have more luck with 16 bit
colour depth.
