FWIW, the going from the default FC2 settings to what was in this posting I
lost 1.25 MB/s :)

T41p 50ish gig drive /dev/hda:
 Timing buffer-cache reads:   1556 MB in  2.00 seconds = 776.18 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads:   96 MB in  3.05 seconds =  31.49 MB/sec
