Thanks people for your input--much appreciated.

I've since changed to the Savage driver and used the command to enable 
DMA and 32 bit access.
Regarding those suggestions for external monitor, my computer actually 
doesn't have a  built in screen. It smashed and I only use external 
monitor and sometimes my projector. Anyway, I'll give the drive another 
whirl with the new settings and see what the story is. I have a feeling 
it might help.
