I was having the same problem with my new T42 and a mini-dock, until I 
finally checked out the BIOS settings. The serial port was disabled by 
default, enabling it solved the problem. I don't know why XP was able to 
find and make use of it while Linux couldn't, but it now works under 
Linux, too.
