The reason why XCOMPOSITE is disabled by default on X11R6.8 is that the 
current driver architecture isn't well suited to accelerate XCOMPOSITE, thus 
making the whole thing very slow. XOrg is planing to integrate a new driver 
architecture into R6.9 (probably kdrive, but that's not decided yet AFAIK) 
and enabling XCOMPOSITE by default then, but the current release ships with 
XCOMPOSITE only so that programmers can start writing apps that use the API.
